All Saints – Ripley

All Saints’ – Ripley, North Yorkshire.

Taken during a traditional walk to ‘blow away the cobwebs’ on New Year’s Day.  I didn’t venture inside on this occasion – trousers covered in mud (walking boots without gaiters, not a good idea!).

I hope to get to visit a few churches this year, after last years dismal showing.

The Watching Loft in St. Alban’s Cathedral.  This is the only remaining loft in England.  It was used to allow monks to keep vigil on St. Alban’s Shrine.  St. Alban was England’s first saint.

This window reveal is deeply splayed with provides much more light through the thick walls of the church – the right hand window of the picture below shows the outside window opening.   (A detail of the chancel of Little Ouseburn church, North Yorkshire.)
