Lion/Dog/Lamb?

I’m not quite sure what this animal is supposed to be.

  1. An early acceptance of evolution?

  2. Wouldn’t it be the faithful dog who warms his master’s feet?

    • That was my first inclination, but the modelling of the muzzle or lack of it, the well defined toes of the paws and the ears put some doubt in my mind. I have seen other tomb cover dogs which are much better sculpted than this one. It seems to suggest that the craftsman was unfamiliar with his subject and it was his attempt at modelling a female lion – although the more normal ‘foot rest’ I see is a dog for women (lions for men). …..
…. I’ve just reviewed some further photographs of this tomb cover and I would consider the modelling of the deceased face is a little crude too… maybe somebody less familiar with this type of work.
